Research Methodology
BrewTested produces research-based buying guides for coffee and kitchen gear. This page explains exactly how those guides are built, what "reviewed" means, and how we maintain accuracy over time.
What We Are (and Are Not)
BrewTested is a research-based review site. We do not maintain a testing lab. We do not receive products for free in exchange for coverage. We are not a journalism outlet. We are a structured research operation that aggregates owner data and synthesizes it into buying decisions.
When we say a product "has retention issues" or "runs loud," that claim is based on patterns in verified owner feedback — not a single test session in controlled conditions.
How Products Are Selected
- Sales rank and category position: Products with sustained sales rank are more likely to have sufficient owner feedback for pattern analysis.
- Price tier coverage: We aim to cover every meaningful price bracket so a reader at any budget has a clear recommendation.
- Community signal: Products frequently discussed in r/espresso, r/coffee, Home-Barista forums, and similar communities get prioritized — they have real-world usage data beyond Amazon reviews.
- Competitor coverage: If a product appears in multiple competitor guides, we research it to provide independent analysis.
We do not accept payment to include or exclude products. Commission rates from Amazon Associates do not influence which products we recommend.
How Owner Feedback Is Analyzed
For each product we research, we analyze:
- Verified Amazon reviews: We read verified purchase reviews, weighting recent reviews more heavily and filtering obvious astroturfing (5-star reviews with no specifics, clusters of same-day reviews).
- Reddit threads: r/espresso, r/coffee, r/BuyItForLife — community discussions surface issues that don't appear in Amazon reviews (long-term durability, failure modes, edge cases).
- Manufacturer specs: We cross-reference claimed specs (grind settings, heat-up time, pressure) against owner-reported real-world performance.
- Expert community input: Home-Barista, CoffeeGeek, and similar forums contain deep technical analysis from experienced users.
Complaint Taxonomy
We categorize owner complaints into:
- Design complaints: Inherent to how the product works (e.g., conical burrs produce bimodal particle distribution — not a defect, a design choice).
- Quality control complaints: Unit-to-unit variance (e.g., burr alignment differences between DF64 units).
- Expectation complaints: Complaints that reflect a mismatch between buyer expectations and what the product actually does (filtered out of "avoid" criteria unless widespread).
- Failure complaints: Reports of product failure within expected lifespan — highest weight in our analysis.
We publish a structured complaint index at /data/coffee-gear-complaint-index/.
What "Reviewed" Means on BrewTested
A page marked as "reviewed" means:
- We have analyzed owner feedback from at least two independent sources (Amazon, Reddit, or forums).
- The product specs have been cross-referenced against manufacturer documentation.
- The recommendation has been validated against the current price tier.
- The page has been checked for factual accuracy by a human editor.
A page marked "Last reviewed: [date]" reflects when this process was last completed for that specific page.
We do not claim to physically test every product. When we have hands-on experience with a product, we say so explicitly.
Update Policy
Pages are updated when:
- A product is discontinued or replaced by a successor model
- Price changes materially (more than 15% from the stated price)
- Significant new owner feedback emerges (failure patterns, design changes)
- A competitor launches a better product in the same price tier
- A factual error is reported
Our target is to review each money page at least once every six months. High-traffic pages are reviewed more frequently.
AI Assistance Disclosure
BrewTested uses AI assistance in content drafting. All AI-drafted content is reviewed and edited by a human editor for accuracy, tone, and factual correctness before publication. AI assistance does not replace the research process described above — it assists with structuring and writing, not with data collection or analysis.
The footer on every page states: "Content researched with AI assistance and reviewed by a human editor."
Affiliate Independence
BrewTested participates in the Amazon Associates program and other affiliate programs. Our affiliate relationships:
- Do not influence which products we recommend
- Do not influence how we categorize complaints or drawbacks
- Do not involve paid placement — no brand pays to appear in our guides
- Are disclosed on every page that contains affiliate links
We link to the best product for the reader's use case, not the product with the highest commission rate.
Corrections
Factual errors are corrected promptly. If you spot a wrong ASIN, outdated price, discontinued product, or inaccurate spec, email paulet4a5@gmail.com or see our corrections page.
Original Data
BrewTested publishes two structured datasets derived from our research:
- Espresso Setup Matrix — machine + grinder + accessories recommendations by budget tier, with JSON export
- Coffee Gear Complaint Index — structured owner complaint patterns by product, with JSON export
These datasets are freely available for reference under the understanding that they represent research synthesis, not laboratory-controlled test results.
